The Sinking of the Maine
The USS Maine was destroyed on February 16, 1898, at 9:45 P.M. in Havana Harbor. They did not know the cause at the time, but they said that they thought 600 pounds of guncotton exploded, causing the entire ship to go down.
Some people thought that it was the Spaniards that had sent a floating torpedo blowing up the ship, but it was just a rumor. Out of 354, total number of the crew, only 96 people made it out alive. The captain of the Maine was Captain Sigsbee.
